Appearances

See Hjælmø layouts and treatments

Hjælmø is an end-grain flooring with a distinct expression shaped by the natural circular patterns of the wood’s annual rings. The end-grain orientation creates a visually dynamic surface while contributing to the floor’s exceptional strength and durability. Each brick reflects the material’s origin from window-production offcuts, resulting in subtle differences in tone, grain, and structure. These natural variations give the floor an authentic character without compromising performance.

Colour variation and grain differences are inherent characteristics of solid wood. The selected surface treatment defines the final tone and sheen, allowing the floor to adapt to different project aesthetics.

Treatment Types

Different surface treatments influence the final expression of the floor, from a warmer wood colour to a more light expression.

Sustainability

See how Hjælmø makes a sustainable difference

Hjælmø is developed from pine wood offcuts generated in window production. Instead of being downcycled or discarded, these residual wood pieces are reprocessed into durable end-grain bricks with long lifespan.

By working with existing material streams, Hjælmø reduces the demand for virgin resources while maintaining the performance characteristics expected of commercial wood flooring. The product is supported by verified environmental documentation, including an EPD, enabling transparent assessment in LCA calculations, DGNB certifications, and CO₂ reporting. With its solid wood construction and the ability to be sanded multiple times over its lifetime, Hjælmø contributes to long-term material value rather than short replacement cycles.

Hjælmø Production Process

1. Collection & sorting

Off-cuts from VTI’s window production are collected and sorted.

2. Finger joining

The off-cuts are made into longer boards through finger joining.

3. Planning & cutting

The longer boards are then cut and planed into equally sized pieces.

4. Installation

Hjælmø is installed using glue and can be laid in different patterns.

5. Full sanding x15

The result is a sturdy end-grain brick floor that can be sanded up to 15 times.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

General

Covers sourcing, certifications, material properties, durability, and what to expect from the natural variations of the product.

Where do you source the wood? Is it FSC certified?

The wood is FSC certified pine discarded from window frame production in Denmark. The wood origins from various sources in Northern Europe.

Can I order the floor in modules for easier mounting?

No, the bricks must be mounted at site one by one. Carpenters state that it takes approximately 20% to 100% longer to mount the Hjælmø bricks than a regular parquet floor. In return, the blocks are delivered on pallets with easily removable pallet frames, allowing for convenient access and mobility. This also eliminates the large amounts of cardboard often used for packaging of similar products.

What is most important for a good end result?

The subfloor must be clean and dry and must not deviate more than 2 mm over a 2-meter straight surface. The subfloor should be tested with a pull-off adhesion test. We recommend a test result a of minimum 2,0 MPa. Make moisture measurements in the room and in the subfloor.

See the installations sheet in our Download Centre for more information on how to mount the floor.

Installation

Guidance on subfloor requirements, mounting process, surface treatment, and recommendations to ensure a precise and durable installation.

My contractor has no experience with this type of flooring. What should I do?

We recommend that you find a carpenter with experience of mounting similar floors, to ensure a quick installation and a good result. However, installation is not harder than for any other floor, and we provide easy-to-follow mounting instructions.

What surface treatment is required after mounting?

The end grain brick needs sanding and a surface treatment. See the specification from the manufacturer of the surface treatment.

Maintenance

Information on cleaning, care, and long-term performance to maintain the floor’s appearance and technical quality over time.

How do I keep the floor clean and in good condition?

See the Maintenance guide in our Download Centre.
