Fusø

Fusø table tops are produced from 100% post-consumer waste from Carlsberg's disposable DraughtMaster kegs. We repurpose the kegs to a solid board. The combination of black and green results in a marble-like appearance. Once the DraughtMaster kegs are empty and collected, they cannot be disposed of or sorted as ordinary plastic. The kegs, therefore, end up as plastic waste. To repurpose the plastic, we wash, sort, and granulate the material. From here, we use the plastic to produce numerous different products. The solutions were created in a collaboration between Carlsberg and a:gain.

1 Collection

Used Carlsberg DraughtMaster kegs are collected in whole country from bars, hotels, restaurants etc.

2 Granulation

Cleaned kegs are ground down to a flaky consistency. All processes throughout our manufacturing occur in Denmark

3 Heat pressing

The granulates are heat pressed into solid boards. The result is terrazzo like due to the various plastics types used

4 Finishing

The material is sanded down to a smooth finish and the edges are treated after in the desired size is reached

350,000 tonnes of plastic waste is produced each year in Denmark

57%

Of plastic is incinerated

Denmark ranks low at EU level for plastics packaging collected for recycling because of its large waste incineration infrastructures that limit incentives to recycle. In order to tackle that issue, Denmark is aiming to reduce its incineration rate by 80% by 2030. Additionally, the Danish government is investing in alternative waste treatment solutions to reduce reliance on incineration, promoting a shift toward more sustainable waste management practices.

28%

Of plastic is exported

In 2017, Denmark exported 48.2 tons of plastic waste. 58% ended up in Germany, which is known to export large quantities of its plastic waste to South-East Asian countries such as Malaysia. This makes waste treatment data difficult to trace and hinders improvements related to waste treatment. This highlights the current need to keep our waste at home to ensure better control over recycling and reducing the environmental impact of waste export.

13%

Of plastic is recycled

Denmark is among the European countries that recycle the least:

The savings from not importing new plastic raw material could save the Danish economy as much as 1.6 billion DKK per year. Recycling is therefore a political priority for the country, which aims to recycle 55% of its plastic waste by 2030. To achieve this goal, Denmark is implementing new national regulations that promote recycling infrastructure, improve sorting systems, and engage citizens in better waste separation practices.

Cutting

The material is thermoplastic, so machinery should run slowly through

Colour

The colour will be varied and is naturally unique

Surface

The surface is sanded smooth and requires very little maintenance

UV

Outdoor environments will slowly turn the green a marble grey

Note: The sheets come sanded and need no further finish. The surface is non-absorbent so dyeing or staining will not affect it. It can be polished to a gloss finish.

Dimensions

Our table tops come in 5 standard dimensions (in cm), with 20mm thickness:

Special solutions are possible via direct contact with our certified and preferred manufacturing partners, who are used to working with our materials. Please do not hesitate to ask us for contact information.

Edges

As standard, we use 90 degrees or rounded edges. Upon special request to our manufacturing partners, other solutions are also possible.

All our table tops are CNC-cut, which makes it possible to adapt to our customers’ needs. Our current mould is 1800 x 800 mm.

We can produce all types and sizes within those limitations.

What is Fusø made of and how much is waste based? Does it contain any hazardous substances?

No, the boards are made of 100% food-safe plastic (rPET, rPP, rPA and rPE) from Carlsberg beer kegs. Carlsberg ensures that our kegs are clean, free of toxic materials, etc., before they hand them over to us, from there we have a complete traceability of the production line from kegs to your Fusø board.

Can you take my plastic waste and make it into a customised board?

No, the production requires a specific mix of polymers.

What can I use the plastic boards for?

As Fusø is a tabletop made of 100% food-safe plastic, it should adhere to regulations for most regular tabletop applications. It is not approved for use in industrial kitchens. If you would like advice on a specific case, please reach out to us.

How and where is Fusø manufactured?

The product is produced in Denmark and made with waste also collected in Denmark. The material is heat pressed and partly melts, to fuse it together. No glue or adhesive is added in the process.

Is the material recyclable?

Yes, the tabletop can be recycled as hard plastic. Fusø can also be cut up for e.g., shelves or any other application you might find suitable. We also offer take-back services for reuse or remanufacturing into as-new products.

Can I order a customised colour of Fusø?

We generally don’t offer customised colours as the colour mix is determined by the input material and we don’t dye it. However, we are working on different colour options and expressions than dark green. Please reach out to us with your specific request.

Which sizes and shapes do you offer of Fusø?

Our standard size is 79cm x 179cm x 2cm. For more information on sizing see the ‘Dimensions’ section on this page. The ‘raw’ sheet material comes out of manufacture in 80cm x 180cm x 2cm and can be purchased as such. However, we recommend purchasing with edge and surface treatment, which results in our standard offered size and a higher quality finish. We’re happy to help you cut the boards into a specific size or shape through one of our partners. If quantity is large enough, we can also support customisation directly through us.

How can I mount Fusø or mount things to Fusø? How should I handle the product to not damage it?

For the best results pre-drill the material and use screws with a wide thread. To be certain that the surface treatment is not damaged unnecessarily, do not take the panel out of its original packaging prior to the moment you need to install it. If you do need to check the quality of the panels or have concerns over the finish, be sure to handle it with care if you need to re-package the material. The wax finish is very sturdy, but ultimately not completely resistant to scratching.

How can I adjust or alter Fusø post-purchase? How can I join several Fusø tabletops?

Fusø can be cut with a regular circular saw and in general be treated like a regular wooden product. Be aware that heat from high friction may remelt the plastic slightly. Therefore, be sure to run your tools at lower speeds and go slowly. If the surface gets scratched or whenever new cuts are made, we recommend sanding the surface with grit 120, 180,, and finally with a Scotch-Brite pad for the best result. A skilled craftsman can join the material with a sealant combined with a tongue and groove connection. On our end, we recommend making a clear connection between two edges using a spacer material, e.g., wood.

How can I ensure proper structural support if used as a tabletop?

For the best results, use a frame construction, which supports the entire tabletop. We do not recommend the use of a frame that only provides support in single points. We recommend that Fusø overhang its frame by more than 15cm in either direction. The tabletop can be supported by an I-profile shaped frame, where all corners have support, as well as down the middle, however, be mindful that the best support is a square shape where the whole tabletop is supported equally.
