High fire performance

The lamellas in this product are crafted from solid discarded Douglas wood, a material that adds complexity during fire testing, but also sets the product apart in the market. The use of upcycled Douglas wood not only enhances the aesthetic and structural qualities but also highlights the innovative use of sustainable resources.

After extensive rounds of fire testing, the panels have successfully passed an indicative SBI test for the stringent B-s1,d0 classification. Final classification test still in process.

The wood originates from Germany, harvested sustainably to maintain a healthy forest. Carefully selected trees are cut down without harming the environment. The Danish manufacturing prioritises eco-friendly practices, utilising bio-based fuel and wind energy. Flawed materials from regular production, such as large knots or uneven planing, are repurposed by a:gain, ensuring minimal waste.

1 Collection

We source the Douglas Fir wood for Flarø FR from a Danish wood manufacturer. The wood is discarded because of knots and cracks

2 Milling

The wood is then processed at Overgaard Wood, in Fredericia. Here the wood is first rough cut for production

3 Profiling

We seek to minimise the number of different profiles so that our manufacturing is agile. Furthermore, we always cut profiles that are optimised to the material

4 Manufacturing

The Douglas fir is turned into one of our final products. For example our Flarø FR Douglas panels

Wood, as a renewable and ecological material, offers unique benefits for carbon reduction and long-term carbon storage. To fully harness the environmental benefits of wood, two essential considerations must be prioritized: sourcing wood from sustainably managed forests and maximizing the utilization of each tree to minimize waste generation. However, to fully capture these environmental and economic advantages, reuse of wood should be prioritized over recycling. Unlike recycling, which can diminish the structural and aesthetic qualities of wood, reuse preserves the material’s intrinsic value and extends its lifecycle. Prioritizing reuse allows for higher-value applications, reducing the demand for freshly sourced wood and minimizing waste.

From 2016 to 2018, Denmark’s domestic wood consumption rose from 13.1 million to 17.5 million cubic meters. This increase in demand is largely driven by the energy sector, which accounts for 76% of the rise in wood consumption during this period.

Easy installation with custom heights
The Flarø panels can be height customised for larger orders. For a taller panel, we combine the standard heights with a custom shorter panel. When stacked, an elegant gap will show between the two panels. Not only does this allow for complicated room geometries - it also makes sure we use up as much waste wood as possible. It's a win for installation time, your project as a whole and waste alleviation.
Verified acoustic performance

The acoustic performance is categorised in sound absorption classes from A-E, where A has the highes absorption.

What is Flarø FR made of and how do you source it? How much of the material is waste based?

Flarø FR is made from 100% discarded solid douglas fir from a large Danish wood manufacturer. Behind the lamellas is a glass fibre textile. The wood originates in Germany. The glass fibre textile is produced in France.

Does Flarø FR contain any hazardous materials?

The panelling is fully EU taxonomy compliant. The natural version (non-lacquered) only contains 100% natural fire retardant (VOC emission free). The water based lacquer is selected for its solvent-free properties for a good indoor climate.

Can the product be reused or recycled?

The product is mounted with screw to a wooden sub-construction and can easily be reused in the right condition. Reach out to us and we can get them back in loop through our take back system.

If it's not fit for reuse, the product can be disassembled into subcomponents – Wooden lamellas and glass fiber cloth.

The lamellas are fire-treated with a 100% biodegradable and 100% natural product.

If the surface is treated the treatment is a water-based lacquer.

Treated wood should be discarded as treated wood.

Where do I purchase mineral wool, which ones should I buy and how much should I buy?

We’re specifying what materials to purchase in our installation sheet in download center

If I only install the a:gain Flarø FR front panel, without mineral wool, which acoustic and fire demands does the product then provide?

The acoustic performance has not been measured without an acoustic batt mounted behind the panel. It can be assumed to retain its fire properties even when mounted directly on substrate. However, a fire engineer on your project should approve of this. Otherwise, substrate-specific fire testing is needed prior to installation. Reach out to us with your project needs.

How can I alter Flarø FR post purchase?

You can saw the panelling and adjust on location – view our installation sheet in downloads center for more info on how to proceed.

For smaller project sizes, can/may I purchase mineral wool and wooden battens through a:gain as a full package?

A:gain delivers the front acoustic panels. There’s a full guide on what more to purchase for installation in our installation sheet in download center. It’s both less expensive to buy these items from your local hardware store and it requires less transportation. Please contact us if you’re having issues on what to purchase after reading the installation sheet.

May/can I purchase the product and install another acoustic batt such as a:gain Nærø, Dybø, Søuld or woodfiber batts behind it. Then what happens?

We only have fire test documentation for Flarø FR with mineral wool. For another batt to be placed behind, one of two criterias must be met. Either no fire requirement needs to be met. In this case, there’s no issues. The second one would be a big enough order size to justify a project specific fire test, including the time and prototype production needed for this. Please reach out and we may find out the path forwards together.

Can I customise the size of Flarø FR?

You can order any height of Flarø FR with an added cost. We can supply panels that are as tall or short as you’d like. For panels taller than 2365mm we may put two panels on top of eachother to minimise wood waste and lower lead times. For a custom width, a larger extra cost would be added or the order size needs to justify large changes in the production setup.

Can I customise the colour of Flarø FR?

Flarø FR is as a standard in natural (non-lacquered) or lacquered. Colour customisation are only available for large order sizes that justify project specific fire tests and test production.
